They walked along the gravel path, their steps muffled. The winter stillness wrapped around them. Birds rustled in distant branches. A gardener worked in silence under a greenhouse arch.

Elin spoke again. “You know... I expected to feel erased. Or trapped. But what I feel most is—how little I need to be seen. It’s almost a relief.”

Mette nodded. “That’s the shift. You stop performing your presence. You just exist. For yourself. For your Lord.” ...

... They reached a bench near a small pond, where the reeds swayed and the sky reflected in broken lines. Mette sat first, adjusting the folds of her niqab.

Elin sat beside her and leaned gently into her side.

“I feel like everyone’s looking at us,” Elin murmured.

“They are,” Mette answered simply. “But you’ll notice: they don’t see very far.”

Elin looked around. There were glances, yes. Lingering looks. Furrowed brows. One woman quickly turned away when their eyes met.

“It’s strange,” Elin whispered. “I’m more covered than ever, but I feel... exposed.” ...
