To the south of Northern Watch are the docks and warehouses from where plum melomel and nuts, grown (and in the case of the melomel fermented) in The Welkwood were exported in exchange for fresh vegetables and grains. 

It was probably the storing of grain the brought the rats, that spread the plague that cursed the city, that ,in turn, lead to it's demise. Although it could also have been the alcohol. So sweet is the taste of plum melomel.
