Magdalena’s tears glittered in the pale light. Anna stepped forward, her voice quiet but cutting.
“You would betray them all for your freedom alone?”
Magdalena fell to her knees, sobbing. “I never wanted this. I want to go home.”
Anna crouched, lifting her chin with gentle fingers.
“We all want home,” she said softly. “But do not burn the bridge others must cross behind you.”
> She thought: Even a dove in a golden cage will peck another to fly free.
“Please,” Magdalena whispered. “Take me north. I will pay you with anything you desire. I can return to Spain, to my husband. This place is cursed.”
The guard shook his head. “There is no safe road. Algiers hunts for your heads.”
Moonlight silvered the dunes as Anna walked among sleeping tents. In the shadows, she heard hushed voices. Creeping closer, she saw a young Spanish woman – Magdalena – speaking to a Tuareg guard.
