Charlotte dressed up very prettily for a New Year's Eve Ball in upstate New York in 1840, but refused to wrap up warmly on a bitterly cold, snowy and icy night as she did not want to "hide" how pretty she looked. Her boyfriend picked her up in a horse-drawn open sleigh and after a fifteen mile journey to the ball site, upon arrival he discovered her dead from hypothermia. A small doll, popular from about 1850 to the 1920s (the "Frozen Charlotte doll") was made in reference to the tale.
