Magnificent is the word that comes to mind, and I note the strength of the highlights in his eyes! I do believe they’re the brightest white on the image, and to me that represents his strength of character. It reminds me of the early self portraits by Rembrandt, where the highlights in his eyes were clear, and as he aged the highlights faded until his last self portrait where they were barely visible at all. Here, Thorin’s eyes a clear and strong and he looks like he’s ready for battle!

I have been meaning to bring him through as he has always appeared to me.  As you know I prefer to go after portraits from the books not the films.  Thorin was always the strongest character for me in the Hobbit. He was a *tough nut.* & that's what I wanted in a portrait.

You are right .. the highlights are the only pure white in the image.  & highlights are essentials to bringing across spirit in any medium.  

In the photo studio and on location I had several methods for setting key lights in the pupils. I especially like the reflective ones where if you look close enough you can see the photographer.  ;-)

With 3D, the highlights were seldom relaible and often not authentically accurate. I created several small PSDs with ready made highlights crafted on layers. I would place these in the portraits as needed to wonderful effect within PS.

AI is a bit more reliable as the source material is generally correct.

Thorin II, also known as Thorin Oakenshield, was the King of Durin's Folk from T.A. 2850 until his death in T.A. 2941, being the son of Thráin II, grandson of Thrór. 

Thorin was still a youngster, by Dwarves' reckoning, when the dragon Smaug descended upon the mountain of Erebor. Smaug left the mannish town of Dale in ruins and killed many dwarves who were inside the mountain. Thrór and Thráin escaped using a secret Back Door. Thus the surviving Dwarves of Erebor were driven into exile.

Thorin led Durin's Folk of the Blue Mountains during their time in exile. In T.A. 2941 he led the quest for Erebor accompanied by twelve Dwarves, Bilbo Baggins, and Gandalf the Grey; he briefly became King under the Mountain until he perished following the Battle of Five Armies.
