The idiom "The Postman Always Rings Twice" means "There's always a second chance". Or in the context of this movie from 1981 "Justice will eventually catch up with the perpetrators of a crime, even if they were not punished for the original offence". Accordingly, there's no postman in the movie, not even mentioned.

In German, there isn't such an idiom. Germans count themselves lucky, if the postman rings even once!

The German distributor renamed the movie "Wenn der Postmann zweimal klingelt" = "When the Postman Rings Twice". Insinuating such a literal event.

There isn't even such a term in German as "Postmann". But in the old days there used to be the similar Milchmann = milkman. And with him jokes of becoming friendly with the housewife, while the husband was at work (back then), are well-known to this day.

As German audiences expect correctly this movie to be about an affair, they literally expect a mailman to be involved and desperately wait for him the entire movie.

Surreal Postman Rings Doorbell in Moody 1949 Los Angeles Sub...

This image shows a photorealistic depiction of a postman from a bygone era, set against a richly detailed backdrop of a 1949 Los Angeles suburb. The scene is bathed in low-key Rembrandt lighting, with deep shadows and moody textures.

It's such a shame that the caption is limited to 140 letters. Even I didn't get the meaning since I've never seen the movie and always thought it WAS about an affair with a postman. German speaker's problem, I guess. So I also thought your image was a realistic depiction of an actual scene in the movie.

Now it all makes sense and it really is the only on topic one. Unfortunately I went with ranking only one, and that was the half on topic one. At least in English beetle and bug have slightly different meanings, that said, choosing bug instead of beetle was an odd choice in the first place, probably for marketing reasons, since it was the VW Beetle, not the bug.

Sorry for that, honestly! 😔
