The worship of Pan began in Arcadia which was always the principal seat of his worship. Aracadia was a district of mountain people culturally separated from other Greeks.
While excavating a Byzantine church (dated 400 AD) in Banyas discovered an altar to Pan with a Greek inscription dating back to the 2nd or 3rd century AD. It reads: "Atheneon son of Sospiatros of Antioch is dedicating the alter to the god Pan Heliopolitanus. He built the alter using his own personal money in fulfillment of a vow he made".
I wonder what caused that vow to be made. π€
