I just finished reading See What I Have Done by Sarah Schmidt, which is a fictional retelling of the Lizzie Borden story and the murders of her father and stepmother. I decided to name the sisters in my creation after Lizzie and her sister. As it is presented in the novel, and I believe to be true about the real sisters, they were trapped into their family situation. At the time of the murders, Lizzie was in her early 30s, and Emma was 10 years older, and neither married. I think they were probably miserable living with their parents as adults when both sisters wanted the freedom to pursue their own passions, but women didn't have that kind of freedom in the late 1800s.
This image shows two sisters in period clothing sitting on rocking chairs on a veranda outside a Queen Anne Victorian home. The scene is bathed in warm golden light, with a nostalgic, dreamy, matte oil painting aesthetic.
