... Elena gathered Vanessa’s hair flat to the back of her head and pinned it low and tight, like a memory being folded away. Then she slid the white undercap over her scalp, smoothing it down, tucking the hair beneath it until not a strand remained.

Next came the hijab.

Vanessa took the long white scarf in her hands, feeling the weight of the fabric. She wrapped it herself — one slow pass around the crown of her head, then over her shoulders, under her chin, back around. She pinned it neatly, no flourish, no decorative edge. Just coverage. Full, firm, absolute.

Her head, neck, and chest were now entirely hidden.

The room felt different already.
