𐤎 śāmek means fish, derived from the Egyptian logogram for stability. It denotes the unvoiced alveolar fricative [s]. Related is the Greek Ξ. In Brāhmī, the retroflex fricative 𑀱 with the sound value [ʂ] is probably derived from it, which became Devanāgarī ष. The Arabic fricatives س and ش are possibly not derived from śāmek, but from šīn.
