Silence returned—but this time, it felt less like emptiness and more like presence. Helena lay on her bed for some time still sobbing until she calmed down. When she felt calmer, she prayed Compline.
“For Patrick’s soul... for all of them!” She opened her breviary and made the Sign of the Cross. “God, come to my assistance. Lord make haste to help me.” Sister Helena paused. She had prayed that opening line thousands of times, but tonight it struck her differently.
It was not “Come, Lord, I have my act together.”
But, “I can’t do this alone. Come quickly.”

Helena continued with the hymn. She prayed the first psalm, Psalm 4. When she got to the lines, “I will lie down in peace and sleep comes at once, for you alone Lord make me dwell in safety.” Helena closed her eyes and placed her hand on her chest. For the first time in a long time Sister Helena appeared to believe it.
Maybe... maybe she was safe.
Maybe she could sleep in peace.
She continued on finding peace and solace in the psalms, readings, and canticle.
