At the time of the prophet Moses there was a man among the children of Israel who was killed, but the murderer was not known. When they complained about this murder to the prophet Musa as, Allah instructed him to order them (the children of Israel) to slaughter an ox and then beat the murdered corpse with the limbs of the slaughtered cow. With God's permission, the corpse of the dead can come back to life and tell them who the murderer is. This miracle proves how powerful Allah is to bring creatures back to life even after death.
This surah is called surah al-Baqarah, which means ox (cow), because it mentions the story of the slaughtering of cows that Allah s.w.t ordered the children of Israel. This story starts from verse 67 to verse 74. Muhammad 'Ali al-Sabuniy explained in his famous commentary book 'Safwah al-Tafasir' that the purpose of this surah called al-Baqarah (cow) is to remember the miracle that happened on the time of the Prophet Musa or Moses a.s.
Would anyone wants to know what this second surah is all about? It is the longest chapter in the quran.

When the children of Israel were ordered to slaughter the oxen, the Quran mentions how stubborn the children of Israel were who would not carry out the commandments of Allah by looking for various reasons and arguments. But in the end they had to do it because there were no more arguments and tricks they could give Moses. That is the attitude of the Children of Israel (Jews) until now.
