Edward Gorey

Edward Gorey (Edward St. John Gorey; 1925 – 2000) was a writer, costume designer, and artist from the USA. He is noted for his own illustrated books as well as cover art and illustrations for books by other writers. His characteristic macabre Surrealistic pen-and-ink drawings often depict vaguely unsettling narrative scenes in Victorian and Edwardian settings in black-and-white with darkly humorous narratives. Gorey’s distinctive drawings are marked by a detailed, crosshatched technique and a gothic flair, contributing significantly to the gothic revival in literary and visual arts. His whimsical, eerie illustrations have captivated both children and adults, influencing a wide range of artists and writers. Gorey's most famous work, "The Gashlycrumb Tinies," is an alphabet book that humorously details the demise of 26 children, each representing a letter of the alphabet.
