Still considered one of the most iconic scenes in cinematic history and widely parodied ever since.
I think most people like to interpret the film and story as one of leadership and individual courage, or at least a google search implies that is the lesson to be learnt from it...
But I think the scene is a reminder that everyone should speak out when one person amongst them is under threat, "leader" or not. Solidarity, not solitarity...
Meercats keep watch to protect their allies, so a fitting symbolic animal to potray unity in the face of attack.

I'm convinced by the portrayal.
