After suffering defeats at the Alamo and Goliad by the Mexican army under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, the fledgling Texas army under the command of General Sam Houston made their way through the forests of northern Harris County. Upon hearing that Santa Anna was marching on Harrisburg in attempt to capture the Texas provisional government. Upon learning from captured Mexican scouts, that Santa Anna had split up his force and upon learning that the Mexican General was planning to march on Galveston and rejoin the government there, General Houston decided to march on the Mexican encampment at Lynch's Ferry along the Buffalo Bayou, some 16 miles due east of present day Houston.

Learning that Santa Anna was in the Mexican encampment, Houston held a war council and on April 21, 1836 and after burning Lynch's Ferry to prevent the Mexicans from escaping, the Texas Army made a risky surprise attack on the Mexicans in the late afternoon as the latter was taking a siesta. When the signal was given, the Texan army shouted "Remember the Alamo! Remember Goliad!" and the battle commenced. Caught off guard, the Mexicans soldiers fled into the marshy area breaking camp. The battle lasted for 18 minutes and eventually Santa Anna was captured. The Battle of San Jacinto paved the way for a peace treaty between the two parties, securing Texas' independence from Mexico.
