They laughed at me when they heard. A woman as the top general of the army? And so young at that? Oh, how they scoffed and sneered and completely ignored my extraordinary test scores and exemplary field performance.

Well, I played their game and here's how it went.

I was given a black dress, and somehow my rank insignia and medals were lost in the mail. What to do?

With a bit of imagination, I stroll up to them with complete confidence in my pink suit complete with white shirt and red tie. I take pride in the epaulets and the beret, even if they aren't standard.

They're gossiping with the politicians, and they don't even see me as I walk up and command them to stand at attention.

Their training compels them to obey.

I explain who I am, how I earned my rank, and how I am going to lead them to greatness.

They never laughed at me again.
