Michelangelo was averse to the relatively new technique of oil painting. Although he worked on a fresco and a sculpture until the last week before his death at the age of 88, he avoided oil painting, believing it to be for women and the lazy, due to its less physical demands. If he did occasionally paint on wood panels, he did so with tempera mixed with egg yolk.
A striking picture of Michelangelo in his later years completing a portrait. The scene, reminiscent of Renaissance art, features dramatic lighting and meticulous detail to evoke timeless beauty and artistic genius.
