Cold blooded animals have limited capacity to raise body temperature directly the way we can, but they sharre our behavioural tactics like seeking out warmer places. Her work is important because it goes a long way towards showing that fever is not an unfortunate symptom of infection, but is rather a very deliberate response by the infected animal to weaken the infectious organism by making the local environment as inhospitable as possible.
This reminds me so of one of my favourite lecturers. Eccentric as the day is long; her happy place was wandering around the desert research station at Gobabeb (Namibia) communing with Tenebrionid beetles and the occasional lizard. One of her several claims to fame was demonstrating that cold-blooded creatures can and do develop fevers as part of combating infection. Warm-blooded animals
