Diego Rivera

Diego Rivera (Diego María Concepción Juan Nepomuceno Estanislao de la Rivera y Barrientos Acosta y Rodríguez; 1886 – 1957), was a prominent painter from Mexico, who was Mestizo from his mother's side. Rivera’s art was part of the Mexican Muralism movement. His technique involved working in fresco, a method of mural painting executed upon freshly laid lime plaster. His large frescoes helped establish this movement in art. His style moved closer to the Post-Impressionism of Paul Cézanne, adopting a visual language of simplified forms and bold areas of colour. Rivera’s murals, which often depicted Mexican agriculture, industry, and culture, were defined by precise outlines rather than by internal modelling. The flattened, simplified figures in his works are set in crowded, shallow spaces and are enlivened with bright, bold colours.
