For moons they met in secret. In Djamila’s chambers draped with Egyptian silks and heavy Nubian bronze mirrors, they lay entwined on pillows strewn with sandalwood and myrrh. Djamila’s poems, spoken against Aminata’s skin, promised eternity in words and touches.

Aminata kissed every scar and callus on Djamila’s feet, whispering that the ground itself was blessed to feel her dance. Djamila traced her fingers along Aminata’s powerful arms and shoulders, worshipping the strength that could carve wood into life.
