Tex Avery (Frederick Bean Avery, Fred Avery, Texas Avery; 1908 – 1980) was an influential animator, cartoonist, director, and voice from the USA. He was a key figure during the golden age of American animation, with significant work for Warner Bros. and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) studios. He was instrumental in the creation and evolution of iconic animated characters such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd, Droopy, Screwy Squirrel, The Wolf, Red Hot Riding Hood, and George and Junior. His directorial style and brand of humour were unique, often featuring sarcastic, ironic, absurdist, irreverent, and sometimes sexual tones. Avery’s cartoons were known for their sight gags, surrealist humour, rapid pacing, racial stereotypes, and violent humour, with wacky characters who broke the fourth wall. His innovative approach to animation was a stark contrast to the conventional family cartoons of Walt Disney and others at the time.
