The North American Southwest deserts were not always deserts like they show in westerns. Before settlers were paid to wipe out bison to starve out natives, and beavers were trapped for their fur, both animals helped greatly in keeping the land healthy. One way to see this is catching some tiny creatures from monsoon ponds. They can hibernate for years, but it shows there was once wetlands where there is now harsh dry zones.
