By the early 1500s, King Manuel I of Portugal oversaw Lisbon’s rise as the center of a global empire. Wealth and goods flowed from Africa, Asia, and the Americas, while enslaved people, local resources, and trade networks were redirected to Portugal. Distant communities suffered population loss, social upheaval, and the long-term consequences of forced labor and cultural imposition.
