As I got older, I took my monster out less and less as my interests changed.
Movies, games, comic books.
Girls.
I just wasn't as into it as I used to be, but my monster never complained or seemed upset. It was content to sleep the days away.
Sometimes I'd forget it was even there until I was rummaging through the mess that was my room trying to find something, only to stumble upon it. It would open an eye out of curiosity, stare at me for a few moments, then go back to sleep once it realized it wasn't needed.
Every once in a while my dad would ask if I wanted to take it with me when we went to visit my grandparents on their farm, let it loose for a bit, but I'd decline and bring a book instead.
I think my dad was disappointed at times.
We didn't really have much in common as the years went by and our relationship was strained at various points. My fading interest in monsters was just one less thing that we shared.
