Sable antelopes (Hippotragus niger) are generally gregarious, but a dominant male will often leave the herd to patrol his territory.
Both male and female sable antelope have the iconic curved horns, but females are smaller and have lighter-coloured coats than the males.
The Miombo woodlands are a savannah woodland ecoregion in southern and central Africa, dominated by trees of the Brachystegia (miombo), Julbernardia and Isoberlinia genera. The Msasa tree Brachystegia spiciformis is called Mutsiwa (the one that is left behind) in the Tshivenda language. This likely refers to an isolated pocket of miombo woodland in the Soutpansberg mountains.
Miombo is an important bee plant, and produces a dark and delicious honey.
This image shows a sable antelope standing under a large tree with bright green leaves, reminiscent of 19th-century Romanticism. The composition and lighting evoke a serene and awe-inspiring atmosphere.

What a gorgeous picture! Thanks so much, Charlie. π I've heard and read about sable antelopes before but Africa has so many different antelopes, I get what I learned mixed up except for springboks and elands.
What I love is all the extra information you gave about the geography, trees and honey! Gives me more to look up as I love both almost as much as I love animals. Thank you again!
