84/ The one who lost

We never found anyone. No plot, no culprit, no one to judge. So we strayed from the path. After hundreds of years we settled down on Earth. We helped the People of the River build a settlement, we helped them increase their harvest, taught them to defend themselves from their jealous, wretched neighbours. The People of the River were thankful and they revered us. But we forgot our mission, our own people. We did not want to think of them, slowly starving with no help from us ever arriving.

Bitterness filled his hollow voice. One day we remembered. Filled with remorse at the realisation that we had abandoned our people, we decided to discuss our options in a secluded place in the valley. We reluctantly had to admit that we had failed our mission. We could not present a cause of the droughts to our pharaohs, so the only way to save our people would be to have them relocate here. When we had decided upon this course, we noticed that a young man had been eavesdropping.
