† Equus quagga quagga
Quaggas were a subspecies of the plains zebra (Burchell's zebra); they were hunted to extinction in the 19th century.
The terms quagga and kwagga are still used colloquially to refer to extant zebras. (The "gg" sound is similar to the gutteral "ch" as in Scottish loch.) The word itself is onomatopoeic, imitating the sounds made by all zebras.
This image shows an extinct equine with zebra stripes on its head and neck, fading to a brown coat. The dramatic landscape and textural style evoke realism.

I also did a quagga! It was hard to get without too many zebra stripes! Someone voted it down, so it never recovered.
Congratulations, Charlie! So glad your amazing image of a quagga made it to the top 20%!
I just KNEW you'd make a quagga (which I tried but couldn't get) ... Amazing! WELL DONE, Charlie! (and with Schnell flux, too!) Managed to get something vaguely suitable ages ago but couldn't find it ... And it wasn't nearly as good as this one ...
