Was inspired by stunning old painting "The Ballad of Lenora" (1839), by Horace Vernet, just have a look at the original, it's very cool!
And the story behind the original painting is from the poem "Lenore" by Gottfried August Bürger from 1773.
In short words, Lenore's fiancé, William, haven't returned from the war. She quarrels with God, saying He is unfair and never helped her.
But on one midnight mysterious stranger that looks like William comes to her and takes her on a ride, as he said, to their marriage bed, which turns to be his graveyard 🪦...😬🫣

reminds me too of a local legend and folk song, where a girl is sent away from her lover by her father, and he comes to collect her from her uncle after he's been dead and buried a month. the speed is also noted in the folk song... "... that in two hours or little more, he brought her to her father's door" a ride of 40 miles. He complained his head ached at such speed and his love tied her handkerchief about his head. "A handkerchief she said she tied/about his head, and this they tried;/ her father spake the sexton to/ that he the grave should then undo./ And in the grave they did unfold/ his body turning into mold/ but tho' he had a month been dead/ this handkerchief was about his head." I can be induced to sing all 32 verses if i have enough cider.
