Willem de Kooning (1904 β 1997) was an Abstract Expressionist artist from the Netherlands. The art academy he attended in the Netherlands was later named after him; Willem de Kooning Academie. As an adult, he moved to the USA, where he married fellow painter Elaine de Kooning-Fried. In the years after World War II, de Kooning painted in a style that came to be referred to as Abstract Expressionism or "action painting", and was part of a group of artists that came to be known as the New York School. He became one of the best-known artists of the 20th century.
