In 1685, Lady Stanhope helped hide Sir Peter Bostock, her fiancée in a grotto in the grounds of Woodrow High House after the massive loss by the Duke of Monmouth at the Battle of Sedgemoor. He was discovered by James II's troops when she accidentally gave away his hiding place when taking him food. Bostock was killed by James II's army for his part in the Monmouth Rebellion. The distraught Lady Stanhope killed herself. She wanders the grounds still today...I have seen her many times.
