Fairbairn blushed. “Thank you, Edward! she replied as she put her pennywhistle in her bag and set it on the windowsill next to the table. “And your lute playing was immaculate!”

Edward blushed. Thank you, Miss Fairbairn.” they sat in considerable silence taking in the ambiance of the tavern.

At the table across from Edward and Fairbairn, two men were conversing over their mugs of ale.

“Did you know my Lucy finally came to see me yesterday? She's been in that camp for two months you know,” one of the men said.

“No I didn't know that, Columbia,” replied his companion. “How is she?”

“Wonderful. She was well fed, Jasper. More than we have better for fed her,” Columba replied. “She has shown us the light.” 
Columbia's voice sounded as if he were in a blissed-out state.

“What are you talking about?” Jasper asked.

“The Lady,” Columbia replied. “She has promised us peace and freedom.”


“That's a damned lie, my friend. She's like the demons of old. Do you want the sacrifices to begin again? They nearly took the Lord Mayor's Wife, had it not been for the Vanquishers,” said Jasper.

“The Lady is not like the demons, my friend,” said Columba. “She is different.”

“Oh really,” Jasper replied, with a tone of skepticism in his voice. “Where does she come from?”

“Some place over the “Rishkay Mountains. Chulak, she once said.” Fairbairn’s ears perked up when she heard the name Chulak.

“That still accounts for nothing,” Jasper said. 
“We've heard many a prophet and wise men promised freedom from our burdens and easy living. But it always comes at a price.”

“You dare question the Lady?”

“I am. She's a bloody damn demon!”


Fairbairn became concerned. Edward leaned toward her.

“It's nothing,” he reassured her. Just drink talking.” Fairbairn studied the men's eyes, especially Columba’s. She had seen it before in the dissident camp and read about it in General O'Neill's report on the Cult of Setesh. Her hand would close tightly around her wrist. 

“No. This is worse.” 

Fairbairn curtsied and Edward stood up and bowed. The two played several more songs and favoring sing another tune, “Greensleeves”.

“What an amazing set from Eversham's own Edward of the Eversham Militia,” said Henderson after catching his breath from all his somersets. He turned to Fairbairn. “And I didn't quite catch your name, Miss…”

“Fairbairn. Squadron Leader Isolde Fairbairn, SG-24.” The patrons were in awe of their guest. Fairbairn waved them off.

“I'm just a normal person, like you lot. I'm just from another planet, that's all.” With that she and Edward returned to their table. The fiddler resumed his fiddle playing.

“You were wonderful, Miss Fairbairn!” Edward exclaimed.
