Tantalus was punished by the gods for stealing their secrets but most notably for killing his own son, cooking him for a feast, and serving him to the gods. For this outrage, he was cast into Hades, and his endless appetite would be his eternal punishment. He was forced to stand submerged in a pool of water, with a nearby fruit tree offering its fruits, but every time he reached for it, it would bend away from his grasp. He spends eternity being teased by the prospect of food, only to never get it. This is why we call such a situation "tantalizing."

This is part of a series dedicated to famous punishments in Greek myth, dedicated in particular to two fans of such works: @Diomedes and @POP-WIZARD .
This image shows Tantalus, a figure from Greek myth, tormented in Hades. The artwork depicts him waist-deep in water, reaching for fruit that remains forever out of reach, observed by shadowy figures.

This is so well done. A truly epic composition and just punishment for the murderer of his own child. Ah...divine judgement.
Wow, this is amazing, Sarah. Very beautiful and epic scene

Another great image, Thank you for sharing. I really like this one in particular, the way the lighting plays onto the tree with his gaze and reach upward in longing. I am really appreciative of you sharing these stories as well, some of them are new to me and inspiring research. ❤️
