Sacagawea (c. 1788-1812) was a teenage Shoshone girl, kidnapped by another tribe at age 12, and sold into a non-consensual marriage with a French Canadian trapper. She was invaluable as a guide and interpreter during the Lewis and Clark expedition starting in 1804, an effort to find an overland route from the American East to the West Coast via the American Northwest
This image shows a majestic Native American woman, leading the Lewis and Clark Expedition through the untouched wilderness of the Rocky Mountains in Autumn. With confidence and reassurance, she points westward, surrounded by her companions and the breathtaking scenery of the Continental Divide.
