“I am strong!” she said, looking back at me with her green eyes. “Yes, you are,” I agreed. Since her mother died, she had taken on so much more than a girl of her age should. Her mother’s hair framed her face with wavy curls, the first thing I noticed about her mother. She had grown into a beauty, something I had not noticed until now. I felt the fear of the world she was going to become a part of, the injustice, the evil of a world I had tried to protect her from. But now, she was going to college, to further her education in a school so far away. I looked into her green eyes again. I knew she was strong, but I also knew those eyes would cry with a broken heart. She would see sadness and rejection and be tempted by “friends” who would introduce her to the vices of the world in this new place. Knowing that, I whispered under my breath again, “Yes, you are.” I kissed her forehead and she smiled. I watched her leave to face her destiny, whatever it held.
