McClendon stepped forward. “Gather around everyone and touch the tractor. It's not running now.” The Villagers gathered around touching the tractor. Several of the children wanted to climb up into the operator’s seat and Pfluger and Eule helped them and any curious adults up into the seat for a few Moments. The entire process took some time. Once all were satisfied, McClendon cleared his throat. “Take three giant steps back from the tractor!” The villagers did so and Pfluger climbed into the operator’s seat. “Pfluger, take her though her paces, please?”

Pfluger acknowledged his CO's order and started the engine. SG-24, Alister, Godrick and his men fanned out and shielded the crowd. The crowd was in awe of the tractor. It made a lot of noise.

Pfluger finished his preliminary checks and put the tractor in gear and slowly the tractor began to move; the villagers were in awe of the sight. “*A horseless machine?*” They wanted to get closer, but the SG-24, the Seabees and Eversham's Militiamen prevented them, so no one would get hurt.

Pfluger maneuvered the tractor backwards forwards and in a circle several times before coming to a stop. Commander McClendon signaled Pfluger to cut the engine, which the Texan did so. SG-24, the Seabees, and the Militia continued to hold the crowds back.

“The tractor can be a wonderful machine, but it's a dangerous one. Right now, the tractor is hot and could burn oneself if touched. For this reason, we, with the Lord Mayor's approval, forbid anyone—man, woman and child—to come within two yards of the tractor without our express permission. Consequences will be determined by the Village Council and Alister,” said McClendon.

It was then that a Man in the crowd began to chant “*Shel kek nem romnak, Tek’ma’ tek maet kree! Shel kek nem romnak, Tek’ma’ tek maet kree!*”

Alarm bells went off in both Sister Helena's and Fairbairn's heads.

“Who said that?” Larkin asked. But there was no reply.

A woman's voice rose up in the crowd, “The Lady is coming!” She cried. “She says that the new Vanquishers are Aldwine! Aldwine! Aldwine!”

“Aldwine! Aldwine! Adwine!” The man began to chant along with her. This began to stir up parts of the crowd to chant along with them.

Helena, who was standing close to both Larkin and Fairbairn, shuddered. “Colonel, Fairbairn, I don’t like the sound of that!” Her fingers began reaching towards her Zat.

“This is Construction Battalion 3,” Larkin said as he motioned. to the Seabees. “This Lt. Commander Gordon McClendon, Kapitänleutnant Geog Eule, Chief Petty Officer Jedidiah Pfluger, and Leading Seaman Stewart Wright. They will be working on clearing the land around Eversham. They will be using a special machine we call a tractor to do a lot of the work for us. A tractor can do the work of many men and horses in short order.

“Let me be clear, this machine is not magic. It is just a machine, like the village's water mill. Just that.” Larkin turned to McClendon. “Commander McClendon.”
