... She folded her gloved hands, then lifted them, studying herself. I am completely closed now, she thought. High-necked, gloved, buttoned, veiled, and faceless.

A rush of pride swelled in her chest. She stood suddenly, stretching her arms high above her head, then spreading them wide to either side. The corset held her tight, the mask pressed her breath close. And then, almost laughing, she let out a cry — a long, muffled shout of joy into the thick fabric.

“Mmmmmhhhhh—hhhhhmmmm!” ...

... The sound was swallowed, softened, transformed into something low and resonant. A pair of passersby on the path stopped and turned.

One of them, a woman with a stroller, smiled. “How sweet! Even her cry is modest.”

The other nodded. “She sounds… muffled, but strong. Beautiful, really.”

Louisa lowered her arms, laughter bubbling behind the mask, though no one could hear it clearly. Her eyes sparkled behind the veil. She sat again on the bench, drawing one steady breath after another, pride filling her chest.

At last she felt it fully: she was not only hidden. She was sealed. And the world, far from mocking, had begun to praise her for it. ...

“Thhhankh youu.”

The words emerged muffled, blurred. The woman smiled even more. “Even your voice — so gentle, so soft. Beautiful.”

Further along the street, a man in his forties tipped his hat. “You look like you’ve stepped out of another century, Fräulein. Remarkable.”

Louisa answered again, her voice indistinct through the mask. “Ihh iss… mmyyy way.” ...
