He appears to be scrutinising the stone, visualising what lies within. When he carved David, he’s supposed to have said he just carved away everything that wasn’t David! This is how you’d look if you had a 17 foot block of marble to turn into a statue of David. Once you’ve cut something away, it’s not like you can glue it back on if you get it wrong! So intense, yes, driven, yes, but also a visionary, imagining what’s already with that stone.
