On the anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, activists organized the first Christopher Street Liberation Day March on June 28, 1970, in New York City. This event, alongside similar demonstrations in other cities, commemorated the rebellion and demanded an end to discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community.
These early "visibility marches" became tradition, and eventually evolved into modern-day Pride festivals globally, serving as key platforms for advocacy. This sustained activism has been instrumental in championing gay rights worldwide, leading to legal reforms and increased LGBTQ+ acceptance.
Nearly 29-years after Christopher Street, then U.S. President Bill Clinton declared the month of June 'Gay and Lesbian Pride Month' on June, 11th 1999.
This is dedicated to the courageous activists who risked it all so future generations of LGBTQ+ people could live in the sun. No matter how frigid it may get, we will not be cast back into the shadows of bigotry.
Happy Pride.
