Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin (May 10, 1900 – December 7, 1979). British-born American astronomer. When she began, women were barred from becoming professors at Harvard, so she spent years doing less prestigious, low-paid research jobs. Often ignored, she fought her way through the male-dominated scientific establishment for most of her life. Doctor Gaposchkin became a full professor of Astronomy many years later.
This image shows a vintage astronomer using a gigantic telescope. The woman is surrounded by men who are looking away from her in disgust under a sky full of colorful stars and planets.
