I have to say, I love the usage of Cherokee in your title, but I must ask - does your description speak using the opinion of the Cherokee people, or your own? Or both?

It speaks to both.  Our tribe is in a continual state of suppression of the tribal sovereignty that was supposed to be guaranteed by the treaties signed as the result of the Trail of Tears.  It is well documented in our tribal history the actions the Andrew Jackson took to displace of tribes to Oklahoma and to take their possessions away.  It is also well known that Abraham Lincoln gave his approval for the execution of 32 Native Americans by hanging while the sentences of 265 other Native Americans was commuted.  This was the Souix tribe and the action took place under the guise of the “Dakota War”.  Tribal children were taken from their families and place in schools throughout Canada and the US including many in Oklahoma.  The purpose of those schools was to erase Native American history, heritage, and their languages under the administration of Jesuit priests and other Catholic administrators. 

 My paternal grandmother (Cherokee) and my in-laws, (Creek) were some of my family pushed into these schools to be “rehabilitated” because to be a Native American was considered to be dirty, lazy, hard to subjugate into slavery, and those that tried to battle against the inequities “disappeared”.  Today there are hundreds of unmarked graves being found around these schools.  Where possible, the remains are being exhumed and returned to their tribal nations to be buried on their own soil and this is talking place in the US as well as Canada.  Elders tell us of their days in these schools.  One child ran away, was recapture, and given the choice between lashings from administrators with hickory switches, detention without proper food and water, and other things.  Those that chose the lashings still bear the scars from those lashings.

This Cherokee native will never forgive the Federal and State governments of the merciless treatment of the Trail of Tears, nor the atrocities of ending the lives of our people in cold blood at the behest of US Presidents, and the torture of our children and the unwarranted ending of their lives.
