She stared at the portrait of her grandmother, hanging on the wall of her living room. She had inherited it from her mother, who had passed away a few months ago. The portrait was old and faded, but it still captured the beauty and grace of her grandmother, who had died before she was born.

She wondered how her grandmother had found love in such a difficult time. She had lived through the Great Depression, the Second World War, and the Cold War. She had faced poverty, violence, and oppression. She had raised four children on her own, after her husband had been killed in a car accident. She had worked as a nurse, a teacher, and a social worker. She had devoted her life to helping others.

And yet, she had always smiled. She had always been optimistic. She had always been kind. She had always been loved.

She felt empty. She felt lonely. She felt lost.

She wished she could talk to her grandmother.
