Opening her footlocker, she found her Carmelite habit, neatly folded by the SGC quartermasters. She ran her fingers over the simple fabric before stepping into the brown wool tunic. “From ashes I came…to ashes will I return,” she whispered. Fastening her belt, she secured her rosary, then donned her wimple, collar, scapular, and black veil with quiet devotion. As the final piece settled over her shoulders, peace washed over her—she was home.

Lighting two beeswax candles, Helena closed her eyes and folded her hands. “Lord, I wore the armor today. I cared for the wounded; I stood in the breach. And now I return to you—not victorious, but yours.” A knock at the door interrupted the stillness.


Come in,” said Sister Helena. The door opened and in stepped Fairburn who was holding a blue and white speckled mug full of tea. She wore an RAF PT shirt and a pair of capris, and her dark brown hair was undone.

“Am I intruding, Sister?” Asked Fairbairn slightly embarrassed but in awe of her teammate’s appearance. Sister Helena  shook her head. “I…brought you tea.” Helena and nodded as Fairbairn looked at Sister Helena, at her habit, and fell silent for a time. “You… look…different.” 

Sister Helena gently smiled. “Not different. Just…home again. Thank you for the tea, Fairbairn,” Helena said as she took the cup. 


“You're very welcome!” the Scott replied. She paused, still in awe as Helena took a sip of the warm liquid and set the cup down on a nearby table. “I just wanted to say that you did great on the weapons station. You showed a lot of courage in Zating the Recon Drones, especially the second one. You were brilliant!”

“Thank you, Squadron Leader,” Sister Helen replied. That means a lot to me.”

“I know we've only known each other for a couple of days but, but you can call me Isolde or Izzy for short.”

“Thank you Fair... er, Izzy,” Sister Helena said. 

Fairbairn smiled. 
“How are you holding up?” Fairburn asked. 

“Well, though I could use some time to pray,” Sister Helena replied. 

“Good to hear,” Fairbairn replied. 

“How's the Colonel doing?” Helena asked. 


After checking their weapons and weapons locker they retreated to their new quarters in the monastery’s dormitory. The team moved their personal gear into their quarters. Sister Helena assembled her cot and spread blankets and a bed roll over the cot. There was a small, abandoned bookshelf and several tables in the room. Sister Helena put her books on the shelf and used one of the tables for a prayer corner. She then set up a hanging rack to hang clothes from as there was no closet in the room.

Sister Helena carefully removed her uniform, treating the process like a sacred ritual rather than a routine. She set aside her jacket, unlaced her boots, and let the tension in her feet ease as she changed into lighter, more comfortable clothing.
