The Kardashev Scale is a hypothetical framework proposed by the Russian astrophysicist Nikolai Kardashev in 1964. It categorizes civilizations based on their ability to harness and utilize energy. In 1973, Carl Sagan discovered Kardashev's work and proposed a more refined classification using the formula K = [Log(W)-6]/10, where K is the Kardashev Type of a civilization and W is the amount of power it uses, in watts. In 2021, the total world energy consumption was 165,3 TWh, equivalent to an average power consumption of 18.87 TW, or a Kardashev rating of K = 0.728. This means that up to now humanity has not even reached Type I status on the Kardashev Scale! A Type I Civilization (10¹⁶ W), also known as a planetary civilization, would be able to effectively utilize and control all the energy resources available on its home planet. This includes harnessing energy from renewable sources like solar, wind, and hydro power, and potentially even tapping into the planet's geothermal energy.
