I just saw your website and read your resume. Since you're a real painter you're better equipped than most when it comes to answering the question of whether AI is real art or not. What is your take?

It’s a tool like any other, right? Any tool can be put to good use. As for the derivative nature of accessing artists’ past works (which is the controversial topic), I’m of the opinion that all artworks are derivative. Nothing occurs in a vacuum and we’re all learning from each other. It’s why I keep my prompts open. I’ve experienced first hand my own work being captured, manipulated, and winding up in a New York gallery, lol. That was years ago but even then it kind of made me smile. I’m a big picture kind of person and try to look for the positive.
You? As a graphic designer you probably have a unique take on AI art…

I took my degree in the late 1990s. Although by that point computers had taken off, most of the training was still handmade stuff and, yes, we did painting: pencil, charcoal, oil, the lot. Alas, by the time I started working in the 2000s, it was obvious that real-life graphic design had very little to do with what we were taught, and mostly it was typography and computers, photoshop, illustrator, etc. As for my take, I don't know. I guess I'm leaning towards that it's not real art. I mean, how can you compare an actual painting of Gustave Moreau with someone writing a prompt that says "Salome dancing in the style of Gustave Moreau"? That said, mastering prompts isn't easy, and I admire people here who have accomplished that. In the end, you could say that AI is art for people who can't make or who are too lazy to do real art. -) Maybe for some it can have psychological benefits in that they express their emotions through it.
