Mette nodded slowly. “Someone’s been asking. Patiently.”

“You’ve seen him—once or twice.”

Elin smiled beneath the fabric. “He must be patient, then.”

“He is,” Mette said. “And kind.”

Elin looked up at the trees, listening to the breeze move through the leaves. Then she turned back.

“You know I won’t stop you from running away from it.”

“I know,” Mette said. “But I won’t run.” ...

... They walked a little farther, passing an old willow.

Elin shifted the weight of her body slightly. “Art history feels like another life. But I did it. Master’s with distinction. Never thought I’d write a thesis on veiled iconography,” she chuckled.

Mette looked proud. “You changed the way I look at images. At absence.”

“I still want to lecture later. After the baby.” Elin’s hand brushed across her belly. “But only part-time. For now… I want to be still.”

Mette nodded. “Stillness suits you.”

“And you?” Elin asked. “How are the shops?” ...
