Phyllis, a beautiful Thracian princess and daughter of King Sithon, fell in love with Demophon, son of Theseus. After fighting in the Trojan War, Demophon stopped in Thrace, where he met and married Phyllis. However, longing for his homeland, he left for Athens, promising to return. As time passed, Phyllis despaired and eventually died of sorrow. The gods, pitying her, transformed her into an almond tree. When Demophon finally returned and embraced the lifeless tree in grief, it miraculously bloomed with flowers and leaves in the heart of winter, symbolizing love’s triumph over death.
