Germany was split into four parts at then end of WWII, which quickly became two: East and West Germany. The East was controlled by the Soviets and held under Communism and the West was controlled by the Allied powers, at first, before being transitioned back into German control under a democratic government. Berlin was also partitioned.

The Fall of the Berlin Wall was the first step towards the reunification of Germany, and was symbolic of the fall of the Iron Curtain of Communism across Eastern Europe, which was rapidly coming to an end as more and more protests and rebellions broke out against Soviet control.
