It is set in Rome in 1800 during the Napoleonic wars & involves political intrigue, torture, murder & suicide. 

The main antagonist is Baron Scarpia, the corrupt police chief who lusts after Tosca & tries to blackmail her into surrendering to him.

Just so you know, it doesn't end well for all 3 characters. But that's opera.
