A silence enveloped the room as Fairbairn took in all that her commanding offer said. Her expression softened, just a flicker. Fairbairn inclined her head. 

“Understood, Colonel,” she said.

Larkin gave a small nod, the sternness fading into quiet trust. “That's all. Get some rest. And the next time you walk into the tavern… keep your eyes open.”

Fairbairn rose, saluted crisply and left the room. Once the door was shut, Larkin leaned back against his desk. Discipline was necessary but so was keeping his people whole.


Fairbairn went down the hall of the dormitory to her quarters change into her pajamas. Then she went to Helena’s room. She knocked on the door. 

“Come in,” said Helena, her voice muffled from behind the door. Fairbairn entered. Helena had changed into her pajamas as well and was sitting down to a cup of chamomile tea and praying Compline. She stood and smiled. 

“What can I do for, Izzy?” Helena asked.

“Do you mind if I have some tea and prayed with you?”

“Of course. Go got some hot water and tea making things. There should be some hot water in the refectory as I just heated some up.” Fairbairn went and got her mug and filled it with hot water and brought some sugar and creamer. She returned to Helena’s quarters where the Carmelite gave Fairbairn a tea bag, which she placed in the hot water.

As the tea steeped. Fairbairn spoke. “Since you’re probably wondering, I had a wonderful time with Edward, aside from the brawl. I got to play my pennywhistle while Edward played the lute. I even…sang.” But before Helena could respond, Fairbairn added, “Just don't tell the others, especially after our conversation on Sunday. I'll tell them when I’m ready.”

“Understandable,” Helena said. She paused. “Izzy, I’m concerned. The man who the constable took a way for starting the fight, he was in a blissed out state. As it he was…”

“…Under Nish’ta? I noticed that too. That's not all, Sister, he uttered the same phrase in Goa'uld the dissidents used.”


Larkin paused. “I know you didn't start that fight, And I know you called for help the right way. But you put yourself in a situation you couldn't control.

Fairbairn met his gaze, her chin lifted. “With all due respect, sir —it wasn't negligence, it was The Lady's influence. The fight would've happened whether I was there or not.”

Larkin nodded slowly. “True, but what matters isn't just what happened. It's how it looks. We're outsiders here. If the villagers see one of us caught up in a tavern brawl, it undermines that trust that we've been building. That was one of General Carter's objectives for this mission.”

“Aye sir. I remember,” Fairbairn said, her shoulders stiffened, but she didn't look away.

Larkin stood up, his tone softening. “You're a fine officer and team member, Fairbairn. I need you sharp, don’t make me worry about losing you to something foolish when there are bigger battles ahead.”
