The giants never used to wear masks; they had real faces that became etched with the years of their long lives.
Until one day the youngest giant carved a beautiful stone face and placed it over her own. She told the others, “This is my real face.”
Another giant, not wanting to be rude, said, “Yes, of course.”
A third giant, eager to fit in, carved a stone face of her own, this one even more opulent than the first. “Same,” she said, “this is my real face, the real me.”
And that’s how giants invented both deception and politeness on the same day.
